6 Keys to Making Reproducing Disciples

Do you want to become the confident, effective, and consistent Disciple Maker you know you can and should be?

Here are 6 Keys to Making Reproducing Disciples that will help you bypass some of lessons I had to learn the hard way.

These are in no particular order.

Key #1 — Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

What do I mean by this?

You must learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable and not knowing what is going on and/or what is going to happen.

For someone who likes to develop a plan and then work the plan, this has been un-nerving.

But this is the life of someone that is trying to listen to the Holy Spirit and immediately obey Him.

How do you get comfortable being uncomfortable? The best way I’ve found is by continuing to put yourself in uncomfortable situations. Situations where you don’t know what is going on and/or what is going to happen.

The more you do it the more confident you become existing in the Uncomfortable.

Key #2 — You can’t Slip God/Jesus Into a Conversation Unnoticed

You can’t slip God/Jesus into a conversation without the person you’re talking with noticing — so just go for it.

I tried for too long to come up with a slick way of interjecting Jesus into a conversation without the person I’m talking with noticing.. That approach doesn’t exist. They will notice.

You have to move beyond your fear of rejection and creating an awkward situation.

Lesson Learned #3 — Disciple Making Would Be Easy If You Didn’t Have to Deal with People — Including Yourself

Making Reproducing Disciples would be easy if you didn’t have to deal with people — including yourself.

Disciple Making is messy because it involves people.

You are getting involved in people’s lives and sharing life with them. Which means you’re going to see and learn the negative about people’s lives. And they are going to see and learn the negative about your life.

Sharing life together is very messy but it is required to Make Reproducing Disciples.

Key #3 — Pray! Pray! Pray! Pray! If You Want Anything to Happen

If you want to see anything happen in Making Reproducing Making Disciples then you MUST Pray and Pray and Pray and Pray.

When you think about it we have a Crazy Story we’re telling people and asking them to believe.

“Some guy ate some fruit a long time ago so we’re doomed. A guy born to a virgin, never did anything wrong, but was killed anyway is your only hope. But he came back to life and floated up into the clouds as people watched. Oh, by the way, he’s coming back on a while horse for his friends. Want to come along?”

I’ve come to realize unless the Holy Spirit is working on someone I can’t produce a good enough argument to get someone to believe this Crazy Story.

Lesson Learned #4 — Making Reproducing Disciples is NOT a Process

It’s easy for me to turn whatever I’m doing into “A Process”. Where I think if do A then B then C I will always get D. Thus leaving prayer and the Holy Spirit out of the equation.

Always remember that someone is going from being “Dead” to being “Alive” in order to become a disciple of Jesus. Ultimately a disciple of Jesus is a work of the Holy Spirit — not a process.

Continually check yourself to make sure the Holy Spirit is in the middle directing/guiding/leading all that you do.

Otherwise you will find yourself “going through the motions of your process”. And if the Holy Spirit went out of business you wouldn’t even know it. You would continue on with your “Process” just like before.

Lesson Learned #5 — Run From Those Who Have All the Answers

If you run into a person who has all the answers about how to make reproducing disciples then that’s an indication they are not out actively doing the work to make reproducing disciples.

Why am I so sure about this?

Because working to make reproducing disciples humbles you. And humbled people know they don’t know it all.

Listening to those that “know it all about making disciples” is a waste of your time. Run!!!

Lesson Learned #6 — Teach People How to Hear/Learn From/Obey the “Teacher” for Themselves

Your role is to teach people how to hear and learn from and Obey the “Teacher” — not to hear and learn from and Obey you or anyone else.

The emphasis should be on helping them learn “How to Learn Directly” from the Word and the Holy Spirit. Not on learning through my filter of what I think the Word and the Holy Spirit are saying.

Instead of trying to play the role of Moses with you going up the mountain. Then hearing from God. And coming down the mountain to tell people what God said. Instead, focus on teaching the people you’re mentoring how to go up the mountain and hear from God themselves.

Doing this requires learning to live with complete confidence that the Holy Spirit is fully capable of leading, guiding, and teaching without me needing to help/correct Him. {Which often requires keeping my mouth shut when I want to speak}
